Learn How to Practice Typing for Beginners
Do not rush when you just started learning practice typing. Practice daily and your fingers will learn their location on the keyboard through muscle memory. If you follow the steps in this article, over time you will become a better typist, able even to correct errors while looking at the screen instead of the keyboard.
1. Using all your fingers.
Relearn the correct finger placement on the keyboard.
I heard some people said that: “I type with only 2 or 3 fingers get 80-100 WPM on online tests. Is it worth to re-learning 10 finger typing?” That’s impressive. Faster than many 10 finger typists. But can you type without seeing the keyboard? If you make a mistake and look down the keyboard, you lose your attention from what you are thinking. That’s why you need to fix your hands on the home row.
Place your fingers in the "home" position.
The basic position can be easily found without looking at the keyboard, feel the bumps on ‘F’ and ‘J’. Certain keys are special. (ASDF and JKL;) are the base positions for your fingers. Your fingers go from the base position to the key that you want to press.
2. Don’t look at the keyboard.
In fact, every time you look at the keyboard or make a mistake, you move your attention away from what you really want to do. When you practice typing - don’t look at the keyboard - Just look only at the screen. Here is example: try to practice the certain phrase of word such as “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” again and again. The repetitive practices help you to remember the letter on keyboard. Practice until you typing faster, then you are up to level practice typing speed.
3. Speed and Accuracy
Learn to be accurate first then improve speed. Because if you make mistakes all the time the longer it will take you to type. Every time you backspace takes longer than if you slow down just a tad so you can type accurately. Remember to type test your speed periodically. With our typing test you can check for both speed and accuracy progress. The number of words per minute indicates your typing level.
